storytime with robert

Been a little slow around here lately huh? Sorry for the lack of updates but everyone is a bit burned out. Peace to everyone that graduated this Spring ’10 term at ACCD and a special thanks goes out to the people that gave me the quick Q + A, doing those interviews were kinda bitter sweet since it felt like the end of an era you know? The last few times i been on campus and had a look around i realized that i didn’t really recognize anyone, and it honestly is about that time for me to get up out of there. All my friends that i started with have come and gone with only a few of us left, and this Fall will be the culmination of all i ever dreamed, hoped, and worked for. I been working on alias the past few days and working on a project that i rebuilt 3 fucking times! Third times a charm though, or so i think? Do you guys remember that movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray? I always joke around with the guys that, that’s what life feels like when you’re at ACCD. Same day keeps repeating and time is definitely ticking, i have these great expectations about Grad Show and hope that my skills have caught up to them…i hope i don’t let anyone down.

This is going to be the best/worst summer ever. It’s already starting to get hot and i am digging deep for inspiration and motivation. Being a designer is about drawing from inspiration and every now and then you reach a mental block…which pretty much brings us to now.  It’s around 3 a.m. so it’s about that time when it gets really random and a bunch of weird shit starts popping into your brain. Like a couple days ago it was my friends birthday (i don’t want to embarrass anyone, so i wont mention any names) and i got all giddy. It was an ex-girlfriend, so i was mad nervous. She was my very first girlfriend and i’m proud to say that we’re still friends to this day, everybody has their muse and she’s been mine since i was 9 yrs. old, can you believe that?  I was in the 4th grade or something and i remember her having these coke bottle glasses and braces and she also had this weird pony tail thing going on her head, and it was funny as hell. Life sure does have a weird way of fucking with you, because after the summer of ’93 she came back and DAMMNN! Those were one of those moments where i honestly felt messed up in the head, there is no way that can be the same girl! She got rid of the glasses, tossed the braces and rolled through that joint like she was floating. She has this brown hair that makes me lose my mind, the most insane eyes i’ve ever seen and her voice was angelic.

I don’t think it was until much later when i decided to make moves, so i was in the cut for a while. I remember every girl hated her, and every guy wanted to be with her…i got into fights and a few arguments because of her and that was some silly ass shit now that i think back on it, but its fun to reminisce. We were around 13 when we got shit poppin’ right? and those were probably one of my fondest memories, all the guys hated my guts hahahahaha! its all good though. We have this festival that goes on every summer at my old middle school and that’s how we had to go about it and sneak around; and so a bunch of us would meet up over there and do what 13 yr. olds do, whatever that would be? Does everyone remember their first popcorn love, or their first kiss? awesome right? i was definitely dancing like Turbo from Breakin’ after that… But like all good things, they must come to an end eventually, so after all was said and done we both had to do our thing and go our separate ways…i mean what’s  sad is that, that relationship ended on a more mature/positive note than all my grown up relationships ever did. One of the last times i saw her, i remember she whispered in my ear “I love you” and like an idiot i didn’t say shit…

In high school i would see her every now and then, and friends of friends would fill me in on whatever from time to time. I didn’t think that i would still trip on her but deep down i still got love for her you know that bullshit? High Schools funny because the relationship game is like football or basketball and its about straight tactics and comes down to strategy. I got invited to go to this dance at her high school and most of the familiar faces were there from our group of friends so we all knew each other so whatever, whatever…then a friend of mine comes up to me and says so and so wants to see you, i didn’t think too much of it since i haven’t seen her in a long time so i went over. We did the small talk thing and did all the formalities and as i was about to walk away she was like, “oh yea, this is my boyfriend”…after that i was confused, and i just thought to myself ” what the hell?, ok…whatever” i just thought that was wierd that she would do that. I told my friends about it and they would tell me “i didn’t even know she had a boyfriend?”… so why would she do this? i was so confused i had to ask my dad (rest in peace pops, thanks for your advice). I filled my dad in on what happened at the dance and my dad dropped the science on me and broke it down to me like this…he said “Rob, that means she still likes you… an ex-girlfriend will never introduce you to her new boyfriend because that’s the purpose of getting into a new relationship, you want to move on. She only did that because she wants to see if you still care about her because women like to be chased”. That’s so crazy, but i really hope every bit of it is true, woooooooosaaah!

Its been a while since i’ve seen her and recently i got caught up and she’s still every bit as beautiful as the first day i met her, and still has the skills to make me retarded over her. When people ask themselves, what it is they have to live for…i already know the answer, I just hope its enough to keep me going even if nothing falls through the way i want it to in the end. So after i walk up and get that diploma, i hope she shows up later that night to see what i did for her.

*Damn, alias will get you confessing some serious shit. I honestly don’t think she’ll ever see this but yeah anyway…as far as the rest of the crew updates. Nahum is completely swamped at work, we haven’t heard from him the last few days so we know he’s putting in work. Cameron has his portfolio up on Cardesignnews.com and is about to put up his website, Wei recently moved in his new apartment with his wife and getting settled in at work. Chan is teaching digital classes and working on his portfolio, Jack is on the grind working on a new project for his portfolio as well as sending those out to a few companies. and finally Eunji is busy working and occasionally makes time to see us when she can. Did you guys know Eunji rides a bike?! Cam and i had Korean BBQ w/ her a few weeks ago and that was just so weird to see, like i’d never thought of seeing Eunji on a bike. It wasn’t those fixed gear joints but, it was a straight up bicycle…she had the straw hat and everything! it was awesome. So Eunji if you’re reading this, be careful when you’re riding that thing…that neighborhood didn’t look like it was the safest shit to be in. I think thats everyone, i’m pretty tired and i think i been sniffing too much primer so i’m out! thanks to everyone who frequents the blog and manages to get some sort of inspiration from it, its aight right? Peace.

diggin’ in the crates…the “holy sh!t!” edition

Let’s go back…waaaaaay back in history when we all had our lives ahead of us and dreamed big dreams.

I started drawing a long time ago, as far as i can remember. When i was a kid i wanted to be a comic book artist and i drew people with big guns, muscles, and chicks that were half nekkid and all that. I heard about Art Center pretty late maybe around ’98 or ’99. So when i started taking “Saturday High” it was exactly 10 fucking years ago! I literally dedicated my youth and my early adulthood to all this shit, so i think that since i’m going to be graduating soon, it’s only right we all take a look back.

This was “My first” car sketch fuckin’ Ever!…one of the first classes i took at ACCD was called “Industrial Design Techniques” with Kwan S. Kim. That dude is the g’damn best, he could draw cars, products, and people and his portfolio was ridiculous. I remember i wanted to be that guy for the longest time b/c he was mad talented and he always had these cute chicks dropping by his class to say what’s up. He would give us these handouts of his class demos and keep it as reference, the sketch above was me actually trying and this shows my first experience with Copic markers. This sketch is more than 10 years old! i can’t believe it. I’m old as shit yo…

When i was taking these classes at ACCD, i’d show them to people in my high school and you can trust that they were all on my nutsack j/k…damn! i was all about the backgrounds. I’d see sketches on the wall at Art Center pre-photoshop days, right along side big tape drawings and i would trip so hard over them. Those guys knew how to sketch for real, i remember trying to emulate the techniques and colors they used but i don’t think i ever came close…

After high school i took “Art Center at Night” courses while i was at PCC. I took “Intro. to Prod. and Trans.” with Thomas Park, who was my first mentor and pretty much taught me everything i knew about drawing cars. He passed away from multiple sclerosis right before i got into Art Center so i never got to show him my latest stuff. The sketch above is from one of my sketchbooks i kept while taking his class and it was around the time i got my complete prismacolor marker set, so i got mad scientist with mixing the colors. Plus they smelled good! i liked getting high from my markers, it made me see colors i never seen before j/k (don’t sniff your markers kids)

Who the fuck renders an RX 8? for real…This was my first car rendering ever. I got my ellipse guides and they weren’t even real ellipses, they were “Almost Circle” guides that i wanted to use and i got down with it in my sketchbook. Damn this is so painful…Hopefully i can dig up some more crap and make a part 2.

Technical difficulties!!!

If you’re checking some of the old posts and wondering why some of them are fuzzy, don’t worry your computer isn’t broken or taking too long to load. All the images that have been posted by me from around November up to very recently just need to be updated. The resolution that i posted them in are uploaded in a smaller size so they look fuzzy. It’s gonna take a while, and i don’t feel like doing it right now because it’s Friday night. The good thing is most of the “Hotness” and “Sketch of the Week” are still good which is all that matters at least to me. Just gonna be a minute, so as the saying goes “If i’m not back in 10 minutes…just wait longer”. -JL Crew

J/K i’ll be right on it…tomorrow.
